Cedric

Ever notice that a lot of comedians come to town?  I’m thinking it has something to do with the proximity to the water and the perfect weather.  If I were a comedian, I’d come here.  Las Vegas is nice and all, but it’s darn hot.  Except for earlier this week, we don’t get all that hot around here.

Anyway…  Cedric the Entertainer from the WB’s Steve Harvey Show (and the movies Lemony Snicket and Big Momma’s House, just to name a few), is performing  at the Pala Casino Resort and Spa.  Okay, yeah, that’s not near the beach, but I think my theory still stands.

The performance is this Saturday (otherwise known as tomorrow) at 7:30 p.m.

Survivor Hits Town

It’s supposed to rain all weekend and the Super Bowl is not until next week, so this is the perfect weekend to…stand outside for hours and hours. The good news is that you’ll be standing out there getting soaking wet for a good reason:  try-outs for the CBS reality show Survivor. Auditions start on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. at Liberty Station in Point Loma.

This is the first round of many audtions, so don’t get excited and think you’ll jump on a plane on Saturday afternoon. Leave your toothbrush at home. But you will need some other things. According to the website, here are the rules:

• Contestants must be 21 years or older at the time of the application.
• Contestants must be a US citizen and living in the United States.
• Contestants must be in excellent physical and mental health.
• Contestants must bring a completed application form and signed release and waiver form. [See the website I linked to above]
• Be prepared to record a 2-minute on-camera video on why you should be on Survivor! There are no re-takes. Be creative, have fun, you can even bring your own props! CBS 8 will tape your audition.
• If you are submitting your own personal tape it is a 3 minute maximum time. In this open audition you have a 2 minute maximum time.
• Space is limited to approximately 400 auditionees, so get there early to get a spot. Auditions will start at 8am, rain or shine. [This one should tell you that arriving early is a good idea]

Good luck. I’ll be the one driving by in a dry car, pointing and laughing at you.

Amazing Race - San Diego Edition

Can you run?  Follow maps?  Look good in front of a camera?

If you said “yes” to any or all of those, now is your chance.  CBS’s The Amazing Race, the reality tv show were teams of two run around the globe following clues in the hope of winning the grand prize, is coming to San Diego. The casting call for the next season comes to Lberty Station on Saturday (Dec. 1st) from 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Each team tryout will be about…well, think in terms of under two minutes. You need to make an impression and make it fast. But, if you’ve ever wanted to see the world this is one way to do it. You know how it will go:  cameras rolling, looking your worst, all in front of the entire tv viewing public while having your every word edited by CBS.

If you’re still not scared off - really? - show up at Liberty Station, South Promenade on Saturday and give it a shot.

Writers’ Strike News

Don’t get excited.  It continues.

Talks resulted in small movement and a very large PR battle today.  The studios execs made a new offer.  The official statement said:

The entire value of the New Economic Partnership will deliver more than $130 million in additional compensation above and beyond the more than $1.3 billion writers already receive each year.

Sounds good, right? After all, $130 million ain’t exactly pocket change. Yeah, not so fast. The writers responded by saying the deal amounted to “a massive rollback.” The point being that the studios are offering with one hand and taking away with the other.  Since the studios are known for creative accounting, this is not exactly a surprise.

So, no new episodes of Lost, The Office or anything else on the horizon. Might be a good time to invest in Netflix, renew that HBO subscription or visit Barnes & Noble.
