Navy Football In Town
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
If you’re looking for something to do this afternoon and love football, you can take advantage of college football bowl season because there’s a game right here in San Diego. Navy and Utah play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl today - and, yeah, that title is too long. The teams meet at Qualcomm at 6:00 p.m.
If it’s too cold, too late or a bad day, you can still see the game on ESPN. But, if you feel like venturing out, tickets are available here.

Chargers Holiday Wish
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
Skill or luck. One of those, or a combination of both, played a role in the Chargers’ win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. With the Titans up 17-3 in the 4th quarter and quarterback Philip Rivers injured, it looked as if the Chargers were on the road to another loss.
Not so fast…
A short time later, LaDainian Tomlinson scored and the Chargers won in overtime. It was one of those games where one might have been tempted to turn the channel early, go get a snack or head out to the mall for some holiday shopping. But, for those who held on and kept watching, the payoff was big. And you need to keep holding. A win over Detroit next week (plus a loss by Denver) could mean a division title for the Chargers. We’ll see.

Area Wins

The Breast Cancer 3-Day walk just came to a conclusion. The statistics are amazing: 4600 people walked 60 miles to raise money to help find a cure. San Diego was the last of the regional walks and the largest. Walkers here raised $12.3 million for the cause.
In a less impressive accomplishment, the Chargers hung on to win against the Colts yesterday. The Chargers should have lost that one. Tried to lose it. Stopped playing offense in the second half. Still, they somehow won. Sometimes miracles happen. Let’s hope one comes through for breast cancer research as well.

Beach and Turf

If you’re looking for a different sporting experience this weekend, you might want to head over to Imperial Beach. The Imperial Beach Pro hits the sand on Saturday and Sunday. For those not in the know…that includes yours truly… this is body boarding competition. There are stops everywhere from Hawaii to New Jersey. San Diego plays host this weekend. You can check out the events, amateur and otherwise, on the USBA website.
For those who prefer sporting events that require nothing more than for you to sit on a couch, don’t feel left out. The Chargers play at Minnesota Sunday. But, get up early because the game is on at 10am here.

Some Good Football News
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports, Weather
The Chargers won this weekend. Actually, that’s not clear. The real news is that the Chargers trounced the Broncos 41-3. Isn’t that a fabulous score? Just rolls off the tongue. If only we could play the Broncos every weekend…
Since the Santa Ana winds are acting up and red flag warnings are in effect for wildfires (ie, it’s dangerous out there), do not celebrate too hard or with fireworks.

No Clinch

The Padres blew it. They had one last chance to clinch the NL wild card. Didn’t happen. So, maybe it’s time to move to football. Now if only the Chargers would start winning…

One More Try
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
You follow baseball? Unless you’re spending every minute surfing and don’t own a television, you know the Padres are (or were) on the verge of clinching the NL wild card. Yeah, well, Padres are still *thisclose* on that clinching thing. Problem is the Padres lost to the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend, thus not clinching. Oops!
Now the Padres have a one-game playoff in Colorado today. The calculation goes like this: No Win = No Clinch. It’s that simple. The Padres kind of (make that must) win this one.
So, take a minute out of your usual non-baseball day to send good wishes to the Padres. At this point, they need it.

Rough Weekend For All

The Chargers lost. The Padres lost. The Aztecs lost. If not for the perfect weather, it would have been a hard weekend in San Diego.
Sports teams were not the only ones struggling around here over the last few days. Mayor Sanders and City Attorney Aguirre are bickering like 4th graders over every issue imaginable. An appellate court sided with the plans to dredge the Children’s Pool in La Jolla and run the seals off the beach.
Too much sunshine? Too much beach? Yeah, something strange is happening.

Tired of watching USC win in football? Well, the SDSU Aztecs play on Saturday. Actually, that’s not fair. The Aztecs beat Portland State last week. But, this week’s game might be a bit tougher. The Aztecs take on No. 24 Cincinnati of the Big East Conference at 7:00 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium. Get your tickets, load up on bad Stadium food and cheer the team on. And, if you have tickets to the Chargers/Chiefs game on Sunday afternoon, you can sit in the stands for two days straight.
Just a guess, but I’m thinking the SDSU tickets likely will be easier to get.
