Know anything about sportsfishing? Me either. But here’s your chance. This Sunday (April 20th) is the 29th annual Day At The Docks event. Eat, learn to fish, take a boat ride and attend seminars. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone.
The event goes from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at San Diego Sportfishing Landings in Point Loma. Check here for more details.

Toreros
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
The USD Toreros are out of the men’s NCAA tournament. The team won its first game. Lost the second to Western Kentucky in a close match. The Tournament rages on…without USD. But it was a fabulous season. Congrats to the team.
Get ‘em next year…

Let’s Talk Basketball
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Sports
Even if you’re not a college basketball fan or your team is not participating (for me, it’s Syracuse University and I’m despondent about it), you know something big is going on in the sports world. Yep. It’s NCAA March Madness time. If you don’t know what that means, for the mens’ teams it’s basically a time for the (supposed) top 64 college teams to play round after round of basketball until the National Champion emerges.
And what does this have to do with you other than the fact regular television programming will be affected at one point? Well, you can win money. It is inevitable someone in your office will send around a bracket listing all of the teams, ask you to guess at the winners of each game and tell you to hand over $5, $10 or some other amount in order to participate in the office pool. The women also play a basketball tournament (NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament), but that one tends to get less attention. They both deserve a shout out, so here we go…
Two local teams made it to the big dance. Both teams happen to come from the same school. The USD women’s team won the West Coast Conference Tournament (wahoo!) and enter the Tournament as a No. 14 seed. The lady Toreros play Cal on Saturday. The USD men’s team, a No. 13 seed, play Connecticut (UConn) on Friday. And let the first rounds of each Tournament begin.
Good luck to both teams.

March Madness Run
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Exercise, Neighborhoods, Sports
For most people, the term March Madness relates to college basketball where the closest thing to exercise is making a beer run. But it can also mean real exercise. Thanks to the Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis club, March Madness means the March Madness Trail Run. So, on Sunday (March 2nd) you can exercise instead of just watching people on television exercise.
The run/walk starts at 7:45 a.m. Meet at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park and run/walk along the San Dieguito River Park southeast of Lake Hodges.
Not bad…and there’s a pancake breakfast after. Check here for more information.

Chargers…

…lost. Quarterback Philip Rivers played injured and now faces reconstructive surgery. They tried. Fell short. Better luck next year.
‘Nuff said on that.

Yes, More Football
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
You’re sick of hearing about the Chargers. I can hear you muttering from here. I understand. Well, since I love football I actually don’t, but still. Despite any Chargers exhaustion you might be feeling, you must admit that it’s at least a little exciting to think about tomorrow’s game. Yeah, we’re supposed to get our butts kicked. Then again, we were supposed to get our butts kicked last week and that didn’t happen. Sure, our starting quarterback is said to be “questionable” to play, as is Antonio Gates. And, sure, that’s scary. But think positively. Instead of watching a Gilmore Girls’ marathon, get ready to cheer.
Chargers versus New England in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday at noon. Go Chargers!!!

Chargers Win!
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
No one thought they could do it. Well, no one in sports broadcasting thought they could do it. The Chargers proved all of pundits and oddsmakers wrong. Even if you are not a football fan - and, really, how is that possible? - you must know by now the Chargers beat last year’s Super Bowl Champs, the Indianapolis Colts, 28-24 on Sunday in Indianapolis. And did I mention that our starting quarterback missed the 4th quarter and star player (LaDainian Tomlison) was out for the majority of the game with an injury? Yeah, the Chargers wanted this one and somehow got the job done.
What’s next? That’s the not-so-good news. The Chargers head East once more to play the unbeaten New England Patriots in the AFC Champoinship game. That one takes place on Sunday. We all need to rest up, pray and ignore the naysayers.

Did Someone Say Golf?
Author: HelenKay, Category: Sports
Even if you don’t follow sports, you know who Tiger Woods is…right? World’s most amazing golfer (A title bestowed by this blog but agreed to by many folks) and the ad man for Buick - does that ring a bell? If not, here he is:
See, you know him. And, now you can see him live. Tiger will be in town for the Buick Invitational (yeah, the same car he promotes in commercials). The tournament is at Torrey Pines from January 21st through 27th. You can get discounted advance tickets and be outside at one of the prettiest places on Earth. You cannot, however, use your cellphone while on the course or try to touch Tiger. Yes, there are rules. Check out the site for ticket info.

Football News

In case you somehow missed it, the Chargers beat the Tenn. Titans in Sunday’s AFC wild-card playoff game. What does this mean you ask (clearly showing you do not follow football)? The Chargers continue on in the playoffs. Again, (if you’re not a football fan) you ask what this means? It means the Chargers are one step closer to the Super Bowl. Sure, it’s a mighty big step. Still, it’s been 13 years since the Chargers won a playoff game, so Sunday’s win is a big deal. If you don’t think so, ask last year’s coach who was fired after the Chargers failed to win a playoff game after enjoying a super successful season.
In case you wonder what’s next and somehow don’t already know the answer, it’s another football game. The Chargers play the Indianapolis Colts (led by Peyton Manning - the quarterback you see on every commerical for everything right now) next weekend. Chargers aren’t “supposed” to win that one. We’ll see…

Aztecs
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, SDSU, Sports
Sick of football yet? Well, you have few more games ahead of you. A lot of games, actually, But, if you want to rotate sports, maybe take the action indoors, college basketball has started. And some biggies are coming to town to play. For example, this evening the lady Aztecs (SDSU) are playing #2 ranked UConn at the Cox Arena.
The Alumni Association is making a push to have this be the biggest women’s basketball crowd in in SDSU history. To achieve that goal, the first 4.312 fans will receive free t-shirts. So, if you love women’s basketball or are looking for something to do - or both - check here.
