Vagina Monologues

Ever wanted to see The Vagina Monologues?  Do you even know what I’m talking about?  Sounds dirty, I know, but it’s really not.  It’s a play based on a series of interviews.  It’s performed by a group of women where each one takes a turn in the spotlight.  The monologues are funny, poignant and sometimes bawdy.  In other words, leave your five-year-old at home with a babysitter.  Frankly, the title of the production should give you a hint to do that…as should the name of the venue.

This performance takes place at the The Rubber Rose Sexuality Boutique (told ‘ya)** on Friday (March 14th) at 6 & 8 pm.

**I didn’t name the place, so don’t whine to me about it

Bad Religion.  Sounds like…well, I don’t know what it sounds like.  It’s a band.  An L.A. rock band.  Check out the band’s MySpace page here.  You know the songs.  You may not know you know them, but you do. And if you want to see the band live in San Diego - hurry.

Bad Religion is playing three shows at the House of Blues. Friday’s show (March 7th) is sold out but tickets are available for the Saturday and Sunday shows. All shows start at 8:00 p.m. So, if you want to go, get tickets now before it’s too late.

D.L. Hughley

You know who he is.  If not, does this help?

Thought so.  He’s a stand-up comic, an HBO phenomenon, the first host of BET’s Comic View and a television and movie star.  And he’s in town.  He is performing at 4th & B on Satuday at 7:00 p.m.  Check him out.

Cannon Battle

Ever want to be in the middle of a cannon battle?  Go ahead, you can admit it.  There’s something oddly intriguing about the idea.  Well, wonder no more.  This weekend the Maritime Museum will present Navy battle reenactments.  It goes like this:  the Californian (San Diego’s official tall ship) is busy defending the harbor when the Lynx comes by and a battle ensues.  And you’re on board to watch.

It’s a different experience and one you can only get if you’re lucky enough to live near water, which we are.  The battles take place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  You board at the Museum at the Embarcadero.  Tickets are a little pricey, but this is kind of special.  For more information, try here.

Lions and Tigers and…Geckos

0801daygecko.jpgThere is a nationwide tour of geckos at the Zoo from now until February 17th.  Funny enough, it’s called the GEICO Gecko Exhibit.  That’s based on that green dude on all of the GEICO insurance commercials.

Now, if these little guys scare you, you can always go over and visit Zhen Zhen, our baby panda.  She’s spending more time outside so you can now watch her in person instead of just watching her on the Zoo cam.

Holiday At Sea World

There are only a few days left to enjoy Sea World’s Holiday Celebration.  There are special shows only seen at this time of year.  The most interesting one being Shamu’s Holiday Night show featuring a live choir.  Sea World is decorated, there’s a light show and the sea lions perform a version of Night Before Christmas - and, no, that’s not a joke.   See:

For more information, go here.  And go fast because the holiday show ends December 31st.

Christmas Concerts

The Christmas season brings trees, food and parties. For many other folks, the holiday season would not be complete without seeing a performance of Handel’s Messiah.  If you’re one of those, or if you always wanted to see it, you have several opportunties to this weekend to enjoy this traditional holiday music.  The San Diego Chamber Orchestra will perform it on:

-Dec. 14th (Friday) at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach at 7:30 p.m.
-Dec. 15th (Saturday) at St. James By-the-Sea Church in La Jolla at 7:30 p.m.
-Dec. 16th (Sunday) at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido at 2:00 p.m.

If those do not work for you, the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus’ performance is Dec. 16th (Sunday) at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlsbad at 4:00 p.m.

Coronado Lights

Ever wanted to take a peek inside some of those adorable houses in Coronado?  Now’s your chance.

Coronado is hosting a Holiday Parade and Open House on Friday (Dec. 7th).  The evening starts with Santa pulling up to the Ferry Landing Marketplace at about 4:20 p.m.  But there’s more.  The stores are staying open late, a parade starts at 6:00 p.m. and the tree lighting ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m.  The evening ends with fireworks around 8:30 p.m.

If you haven’t been to Coronado in a few months or you stay away most of the year due to tourists, this might be a good time to check it out.
