Styx Hits Town

Styx is…are?…no, I think it’s is…back.  I am, of course, referring to the 70s rock band, not the river leading to hell.  Styx is/are playing at House of Blues on Saturday (Feb. 16th). Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and the show starts at 9:00 p.m.

And since I don’t know what else to say about this, I’ll just stop right here…

Musical Pursuit

In the mood to show off your music knowledge?  Since I tend to be one of those folks who knows the words to a song but has no idea who the performing artist is or what the title of the song might be, this is not a great idea for me.  For music enthusiasts, however, this is a golden opportunity to win cash…well, some cash.  The real fun is in the game.

The event is called Musical Pursuit Bar Quiz Night.  It takes place every Thursday at the Whistle Stop Bar on Fern Street downtown.  Basically, you bring a group of 3-5 people.  Teams put in $5 each and take turns answering music questions. The winning team gets the pot (of money).

Sounds like much more fun that anything you’ll see on television.  If you like bars and music, you may want to give it a shot.

Garrison Keillor

Humorist Garrison Keillor  is coming to town.  You know him from public radio’s A Praire Home Companion.  Think “Lake Wobegon” and it might come to you.   Or, possibly, you’ve heard his name somewhere and just don’t know where.  No matter how or why, you have your chance to see him in person in San Diego.  Keillor will share his anecdotes with the audience at the Civic Theatre on Monday January 7th at 7:30 p.m.

For those who for some reason love Lindsay Lohan, you could always skip the live performance  and just rent the movie A Prairie Home Companion.

Or you could just pay to see Keillor in person…

Christmas Concerts

The Christmas season brings trees, food and parties. For many other folks, the holiday season would not be complete without seeing a performance of Handel’s Messiah.  If you’re one of those, or if you always wanted to see it, you have several opportunties to this weekend to enjoy this traditional holiday music.  The San Diego Chamber Orchestra will perform it on:

-Dec. 14th (Friday) at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach at 7:30 p.m.
-Dec. 15th (Saturday) at St. James By-the-Sea Church in La Jolla at 7:30 p.m.
-Dec. 16th (Sunday) at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido at 2:00 p.m.

If those do not work for you, the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus’ performance is Dec. 16th (Sunday) at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carlsbad at 4:00 p.m.

Dance, Dance, Dance

Are you a Lord of the Dance fan?  This is the Irish dancing where, for the most part, the dancers upper bodies stay straight while their lower bodies go nuts.  If you watch those PBS fundraising drives, guaranteed you’ve seen this dancing.  It’s been around for about a decade and started by Michael Flatley. If you watched the television show Dancing with the Stars a few weeks ago you saw Flatley and some of his dancers do a number.

And now you can see it in person (the show, not Flatley)… The show Lord of the Dance will be at the San Diego Civic Theatre tomorrow (Nov. 28th) at 7:30p.m. At this point you might need to track down tickets from a broker. Good luck affording those. But, if you’re a fan this is your chance to catch a live view.

American Idol In Town

If you love the reality show American Idol, and since it’s so popular a bunch of you must, one of the winners is in town this weekend.  Kelly Clarkson, Grammy Award winner and winner of American Idol’s first season way back in 2002 - seems like yesterday, doesn’t it? - is on tour.  She lands in San Diego on November 16th (that’s Friday) to promote her newest and somewhat controversial album, My December

The show is at the Civic Theatre (3rd Ave and B St.) and starts at 8:00 p.m.

Ross Versus Sugarland

If you are looking for two totally different music experiences, I would direct your attention to two concerts happening this week in our area.  Try to imagine two concerts you would never think of together…yeah, Diana Ross and Sugarland.

How about that for offering a range of  potential date night options?

Now for the details:  Diana Ross is performing tonight at Rincon (Harrah’s Rincon Casino and Resort).  Sugarland is playing tomorrow (Nov. 2nd) at the Sports Arena. Tickets to the Ross concert cost $75 and $85. Getting into the Sugarland will cost you about half that amount…you know, in case that helps you pick one over the other.
