Wounded Marines
Author: HelenKay, Category: All For Charity, Exhibits, Military, Special Shows
The Wounded Marine Careers Foundation has established the The Wounded Marine Training Center for Careers in Media to help Marines wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan train for alternate careers in journalism and filmmaking. The Center then assists the program’s graduates in finding job placements in those industries.
The Center is newly opened and ready for business. The faculty and facilities are impressive. The idea behind this is pure genius. We all talk about doing something for injured servicemembers. This Foundation is doing something.
The first class graduates soon. A student film festival showcasing their work takes place this afternoon at 4:00 pm at the Center (4705 Ruffin Road).

Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Exhibits
Who doesn’t love a circus? Me either, but one is coming to town.
The New Shanghai Circus comes to the Balboa Theatre on Sunday (Feb. 17th). Acrobats, jugglers and contortionists will entertain the crowd starting at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster.
That’s about all I know, but isn’t this an interesting photo?
Imagine how good the show will be.

Pompeii in San Diego
Author: HelenKay, Category: Arts, Balboa Park, Exhibits, Museums
It’s hard not to be at least a little intrigued by the legend of Pompeii. Mt. Vesuvius erupts and wipes out everything and everyone in its path. People are frozen in ash where they stand. It’s an amazing - and scary - story.
If your interest in Pompeii extends to knowing more about the destruction, you are in luck. The traveling exhibit of over 250 artifacts from Pompeii opens at the San Diego Natural History Museum this Friday (February 15th).
Tickets for the exhibit, A Day in Pompeii, are available through June 15th. If you are interested in checking this out, don’t wait. The tickets are timed and prime dates sell out.

World’s Greatest Hobby
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Exhibits
This weekend (January 12 & 13th) the Del Mar Fairgrounds play host to The World’s Greatest Hobby Tour. No, I did not make that up. It’s the title. And, the hobby in question is model railroading/model trains. There will even be 100 Thomas the Tank trains for kids to play with, along with many other exhibits, events and fun.
The event takes place in Bing Crosby Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. There’s a charge for the event and for parking, so plan ahead.

Lions and Tigers and…Geckos
Author: HelenKay, Category: Exhibits, Special Shows, Zoo
There is a nationwide tour of geckos at the Zoo from now until February 17th. Funny enough, it’s called the GEICO Gecko Exhibit. That’s based on that green dude on all of the GEICO insurance commercials.
Now, if these little guys scare you, you can always go over and visit Zhen Zhen, our baby panda. She’s spending more time outside so you can now watch her in person instead of just watching her on the Zoo cam.

Boat Show
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Exhibits
Are you in the market for a boat? Or, maybe, you just like to look at boats. Either way, you’re in luck because the San Diego Boat Show is in town. From now until January 6th (Sunday) at the Convention Center you can gawk all you want. Boats, gear, fishing seminars, water-related video games and family activities - yeah, there is something for everyone at this thing. And, it’s supposed to rain so being inside dreaming about boating might be better than being outside in non-stop drizzle.

Dead Sea Scrolls
Author: HelenKay, Category: Exhibits, Museums, Restaurants
The San Diego Natural History Museum was chosen as one of the few stops on the traveling Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit tour. The Exhibit is only in town through December 31st. Tickets are on sale but those around the holidays are selling out.
Maybe this isn’t your thing. Still, how often do you get to see something from the 1st Century CE. Really, we don’t get a lot of that in California. Whether or not you’re religious - and you don’t have to be religious to be impressed by this one - it is an interesting historical find. And, the Museum is in Balboa Park, which is lovely. The restuarant Prado is nearby. You can get a ticket, tour the exhibit then sit outside and have a nice lunch.
