Circus Time
Author: HelenKay, Category: Arts, Events & Happenings, Special Shows
There’s a circus in town. But this sounds like a different type of circus. It’s called Technomania Circus. This is really about light shows and performance art and…well, that’s all I can tell you.
If you want to check it out for yourself, head to the Center For Amusing Arts (Commercial Street) this Saturday (April 5th) at 7:30 p.m. for the show. You can also try the link (see above), but be forewarned that the “Meet The Circus” part of the link is under construction.

The Wiggles
Author: HelenKay, Category: Arts, Events & Happenings, Music, SDSU, Special Shows
The Wiggles are in town. For some, that likely sounds like a disease. For others, it’s the only sound that brings peace to an otherwise rowdy home full of preschoolers. For still others…both answers are right.
The Wiggles are agroup of four dudes from Australia who sing kids’ songs and put on elaborate shows that mesmerize kids. If you’ve never heard of them, you likely don’t have kids. In that case, my suggestion would be to stay away from Cox Arena this evening. The Wiggles perform there at 6:30 p.m. This means traffic congestion in and around the college area…where I live. Yes, I will be staying home this evening.

The hills are alive with flowers once again. The Flower Fields® at Carlsbad Ranch are open. The season runs through approximately May 10th. For a fee, you get to wander through rows and rows of flowers. Walk or pay a bit extra and ride the tractor - it’s your choice. Fifty acres are yours to explore.
The Flower Fields are located about halfway between Orange County and San Diego off Interstate 5 (exit on Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad). The flowers won’t last forever and appromately 150,000 visitors are expected, so get going.

Get Your Bonnets Ready
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Holiday Events
Easter is on Sunday. In addition to the obvious religious aspects, this means it’s bunny and candy time. What a fabulous holiday…
Petco Park gets into the action by handing over the facility to children for a ”Park at the Park” event. There’s a parade and the obligatory egg hunt. For those who like something a little different, there’s even a hat-making workshop.
This annual event starts at 11:00 a.m, so hop on over (couldn’t resist, sorry).

Let’s Talk Basketball
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, Sports
Even if you’re not a college basketball fan or your team is not participating (for me, it’s Syracuse University and I’m despondent about it), you know something big is going on in the sports world. Yep. It’s NCAA March Madness time. If you don’t know what that means, for the mens’ teams it’s basically a time for the (supposed) top 64 college teams to play round after round of basketball until the National Champion emerges.
And what does this have to do with you other than the fact regular television programming will be affected at one point? Well, you can win money. It is inevitable someone in your office will send around a bracket listing all of the teams, ask you to guess at the winners of each game and tell you to hand over $5, $10 or some other amount in order to participate in the office pool. The women also play a basketball tournament (NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament), but that one tends to get less attention. They both deserve a shout out, so here we go…
Two local teams made it to the big dance. Both teams happen to come from the same school. The USD women’s team won the West Coast Conference Tournament (wahoo!) and enter the Tournament as a No. 14 seed. The lady Toreros play Cal on Saturday. The USD men’s team, a No. 13 seed, play Connecticut (UConn) on Friday. And let the first rounds of each Tournament begin.
Good luck to both teams.

Have you noticed how many comics are stopping in San Diego lately? I actually had to add a special category to the sidebar because there were so many. Well, this week is no different. George Lopez hits town on Saturday.
He’ll be performing at the Sports Arena at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.

St. Patrick’s Day
Author: HelenKay, Category: Balboa Park, Events & Happenings, Festivals, Holiday Events
Yes, I’m a few days early. The holiday is on Monday. The parade and festival is Saturday.
Guinness is this year’s sponsor of the St. Patrick’s Parade and Family Festival in Balboa Park. Music, entertainment, food, carnival rides, a Celtic Village and everything Irish begins at 10:00 a.m. The parade kicks off at 11:00. The festivites are free and go to 5:00 p.m.
The special guest of this event? Mayor Jerry Sanders. I leave it to you to decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Spelling Bee
Author: HelenKay, Category: Events & Happenings, News
In these days of scandals (thank you to the governor of NY), political wrangling (thank you Democrats) and lies (thank you to the authors who claimed to write memoirs but were really writing bad fiction), it’s good to know that some things are positive and wholesome. I’m talking about the San Diego County Spelling Bee. Seventy-one contestants met in Mission Valley yesterday to wow us all with their spelling abilities. And so they did.
Justin Song, an eighth-grader at Carmel Valley Middle School, won for the second year in a row. The winning word was phylliform. I had to look it up. It means having the shape of a leaf…but you knew that, I’m sure.
Song now goes on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Congrats to Song.
