Author: HelenKay, Category: Books, Events & Happenings, Festivals, Music
…but not together. If you’re in the mood to leave San Diego and are looking for some culture, I have two options for you.
If you are the music type, Coachella is here. This is a huge festival that takes place at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, CA (think: Palm Springs area). Three days, starting tonight. Check out the site because, honestly, whatever description I give this will not do it justice.
For those who prefer books to music…or just like driving to LA…this weekend is the L.A. Times Festival of Books. This one is Saturday and Sunday. It’s a booklover’s dream. Meet authors from all different genres, attend author panels, buy books…all good stuff.
Get in your environmentall friendly cars and go…

Stephen Cannell In Town
Author: HelenKay, Category: Arts, Books
Television writer/producer Stephen J. Cannell is coming to town. The man who gave us 21 Jump Street and The Rockford Files (and I showing my age…?) will be at Mysterious Galaxy Books (Clairemont Mesa Boulevard) on Thursday January 24th around 1:00 p.m. for an informal meet and greet with readers. He will also be signing copies of his newest release, Three Shirt Deal.
In case you’re wondering, the plot goes like this:
A small-time crook is doing life in California’s notoriously brutal Corcoran State Prison for the murder of his mother. He admitted to the crime, but now he claims his confession was coerced by the cops. A beautiful Internal Affairs detective, Secada “Scout” Llevar, asks Shane to help investigate, and he agrees after learning the original homicide detective was Brian Devine, a ruthless cop with whom Scully has a bad history.
What begins as a routine review quickly turns into something much more deadly. The case is abruptly shut down by an LAPD deputy chief, and Shane begins to suspect that for unknown reasons the prisoner really may have been framed by the police. But some things, once started, cannot be stopped, and the investigation spirals dangerously out of control, implicating a violent Hispanic gang, a millionaire power broker, and the front-runner in the Los Angeles mayoral race.
Meanwhile, Shane and Alexa struggle to save their marriage, which has come perilously close to disintegration since Alexa’s near-fatal shooting in White Sister—just as Shane finds himself attracted to his new partner. Could the answer to their marital troubles be tied to the case he’s investigating? In Cannell’s latest heart-pounding thriller, Shane is tried in ways he has never been, risking his family, his job, and his life.

Book Time
Author: HelenKay, Category: Books, Events & Happenings
You can do about a thousand different things on the day after Thanksgiving - eat more, sleep off your food-induced coma, watch football, get up off your sofa for the first time in 24 hours, head over to the mall (’tho why you would do that one is not clear) or some combination of those. Or, instead of doing one of the usual things, you could do something totally different. The “totally different” in question is to head over to the local independent bookstore superstar, Mysterious Galaxy, and hear about some great books.
On Friday (Nov. 23rd) at 4:00 p.m. the folks at Mysterious Galaxy will host a Staff Picks Live! event. The staff does all the work by choosing the books, talking about them and having them available for purchase. You arrive, listen and enjoy. That’s it.
Some of the books in question are:
-Hex Marks the Spot:A Bewitching Mystery by Madelyn Alt
-The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz
-Hand of Evil by J.A. Jance
And, if the books being discussed don’t interest you, there’s a whole bookstore of choices right there.
