St. Patrick’s Day

Yes, I’m a few days early.  The holiday is on Monday.  The parade and festival is Saturday.

Guinness is this year’s sponsor of the St. Patrick’s Parade and Family Festival in Balboa Park. Music, entertainment, food, carnival rides, a Celtic Village and everything Irish begins at 10:00 a.m.  The parade kicks off at 11:00.  The festivites are free and go to 5:00 p.m.

The special guest of this event?  Mayor Jerry Sanders.  I leave it to you to decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Pompeii in San Diego

It’s hard not to be at least a little intrigued by the legend of Pompeii.  Mt. Vesuvius erupts and wipes out everything and everyone in its path.  People are frozen in ash where they stand.  It’s an amazing - and scary - story.

If your interest in Pompeii extends to knowing more about the destruction, you are in luck.  The traveling exhibit of over 250 artifacts from Pompeii opens at the San Diego Natural History Museum this Friday (February 15th).

Tickets for the exhibit, A Day in Pompeii, are available through June 15th.  If you are interested in checking this out, don’t wait.  The tickets are timed and prime dates sell out.

Booze in Balboa

The first step is complete.  The Balboa Park Committee voted yesterday to support a partial alcohol ban for the Park.  Under the Board’s plan, the areas  and times in which people can drink in the Park will be restricted.  The Park and Recreation Board has to weigh in, then it’s up to the City Council to vote on the measure.  If the Council supports the Board, you’re going to have to start drinking in the Park at noon instead of 8:00 a.m. as you do now.  To paraphrase Board member Laurie Burgett’s comment on this issue:  this is not exactly a draconian measure.  After all, should you be getting drunk and stupid in the Park at 8:00 a.m.?  Uh, no.  Clearly that’s an afternoon activity.
